Review: “Natural Born Haters” DVD

Jesse Romano – Tailwhip

DNS BMX is a group of friends from Eastern Long Island and New York. The crew includes Mike Mann, Chris Dowd, Kevin Valot, Brian Shane, Brian “Skoopz” Scott, Justin Crofton, Jesse Romano and Jeff Purdy.

The group released a trailer for their first DVD a few weeks ago and shortly after the videos premiere Jeff Purdy was kind enough to send us through a copy to check out. Since I had some free time I figured I would pop in the DVD and give it a watch. You can read the full review for the DNX BMX “Natural Born Haters” DVD after the jump.

‘Skoopz’ – Wallride Over The Poles

Intro:
The videos intro starts with a barrage of pretty hard slams over a heavy metal song. Personally, I have always been a fan of hard music for wrecking out but the intro also mixes in some of the B-Roll clips from the videos sections. The combination of hard slams, heavy music and B-Roll footage was enough to get me pumped to see more. The intro ends with Mike Mann sitting on a curb and being reprimanded by a police officer before he is eventually cited.

Mike Mann:
I am unfamiliar with most of the DNS crew but Mike Mann was a name I had already known for awhile. Mike’s section comes through with a lot of smooth riding and manual 180 links. Mike also has a good amount of grind variations in his bag. Along with a huge triple kinked rail, Mike’s section delivers an awesome wooden handrail tire ride to 360, long Icepick grinds and a pretty crazy ender most wouldn’t even dare to consider.

Chris Dowd / Kevin Valot:
Both sections delivered a good variety of tricks that you don’t commonly see. Chris Dowd is pegless but makes up for it with some good use of his pedal. He also does one of the cleanest fastplant to wallrides I’ve ever seen.

Kevin has a lot of potential for the future and a clean, smooth style of riding. His section has a nice blend of street moves including a cool feeble to drop feeble 180 and a tire ride to turndown that really stood out.

Friends:
The friends section has a really good upbeat feel to it and a long list of riders including Kevin Little, Brendan Mulrooney, Steve Smith, Cody Hollingsworth, Justin Benthien and Robbie Downward just to name a few. This section was packed with some of the videos best riding especially from Jamie Barnhart who closes out the section with moves like a smith to icepick 180 and an icepick to 360 on a flat ledge in Philly.

Brian Shane & Brian “Skoopz” Scott Split Section:
“Skoopz” is another one of the DNS crew I had previous knowledge of so I was especially excited to see more footage from him. “Skoopz” has some pretty fast barspins and tailwhips that he links on really tight setups. He’s also got a great variety of grinds and shuts it down with a switch hangover toothpick on a flat rail over a stair gap before his ender.

Brian Shane plays a perfect counter part to “Skoopz”. Brian lays out a bunch of smooth street lines along with some big rail moves like an icepick grind to hop over on a flat rail setup and a really long mellow rail to 180. I’ll be looking forward to seeing anything with these guys names in it in the future.

Jeff Purdy – 360 Tuck No Hander

Justin Crofton:
Right from the jump this guy was going full speed. Big sidewalk to sidewalk street gaps and a knack for backwards grinds. A backwards flatrail to backwards manual out really stood out. There are also some bigger moves including a 180 handicap rail gap, a big triple kinked rail and a pretty crazy rail/ledge feeble. The section ends with a car pulling Justin to a crazy banger. Afterward they show the crash he took beforehand which is a pretty rough slam. How he managed to give it a another try is beyond me.

Jesse Romano:
With only one section left after Jesse’s I had high expectations and I was not let down. This is another guy with a wide variety of tricks and a lot of smooth lines. He’s also got a pretty strong front end game. Some of the notable tricks included a 180 barspin down a five set of double wide steps, a feeble to hop manual to tailwhip, a bar to 540 on a loading dock and ends with a bank to bank nose manual across one ballsy setup.

Jeff Purdy:
Jeff is the last of the DNS guys I had some previous knowledge of due to his frequent visits to the area. The section features two songs and includes some trail riding as well. There are a lot of big street moves in Jeff’s section and a cool blend of big park tricks being thrown on street setups as well. Overall the section has a great blend of both tricks and terrain. One rail to rail gap over a big drop really stuck out to me, as well as a flatrail double to hop over into a tight, tall bank that Jeff wrecks on several times.

Credits:
The credits section was exactly what you would expect from most BMX videos. Credits, and some general goofing around from the guys behind the video. Still, the credits section like the entire video gives off a great vibe.

Summary:
“Natural Born Haters” is about 40 minutes in duration. It has all the feels of a great scene video. Good friends having a great time riding their bikes. I never expect a scene video to be perfect and in part it’s the shaky filming, dirty lenses, bad editing and classic SD glitches that give them that great feel. DNS did a decent job editing and the glitches in some of the footage at times helped reinforce the fact that this is a scene video.

In submission, the video is packed with great street and park riding. It has a good vibe and is well worth the few dollars to pick up a copy. A lot of the music in the video is mellow except the opening song so if you’re looking for gangsta rap and close-ups of guys smoking weed this probably isn’t the video for you. Overall I was impressed with the video and suggest picking up a copy and checking it out for yourself.

More copies of the video are currently being duplicated so you will have to reach out to DNS or Jeff Purdy directly for a copy until they are available through their online store.
